A recent open-to-all singing morning

Don’t read music? Don’t panic!

Although many members of the Society can read music, a significant number can’t and it doesn’t stop them from participating fully. If you can’t read music we have practice tapes for you to borrow, and if you have access to the internet, you can listen to the voice parts of major choral works. You can listen and practise at home along with your computer!

If you could read music many years ago but feel rusty now, give it another try! You’ll be surprised at how quickly you remember how the ‘dots’ work

How much does it cost to join?

The annual subscription is £80 (payable in two halves) to cover hire costs for the venue and the music. You can come along to three rehearsals before paying..

Will I have to audition?

No.  We do not hold auditions or ask you to sing solo unless you want to.

When and where are rehearsals held?

Rehearsals are held every Monday evening in term time, in Friars Hall, School Street, Sudbury, 7.30pm – 9.30pm. We have a break at 8.30pm when soft drinks are available for purchase.

Rehearsals are friendly and supportive, although in order to learn the music to performance standard, progress is taken seriously. All music is provided.

When and where are the performances?

We perform four concerts each year, all in St Peter’s, Market Hill, Sudbury.

·         Spring concert – a Saturday evening, towards the end of April

·         Summer Concert – a Sunday afternoon in June

·         Autumn Concert – a Sunday evening, mid November

·         Christmas Concert – a Sunday afternoon in December.

The Spring Concert and Autumn Concert are usually major choral works, performed with an invited orchestra and soloists. Recent works have included Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Stanford’s Songs of the Fleet and Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël.

The Summer Concert is lighter in tone and is usually accompanied by a cream tea for the audience. Last year we performed a joint concert with our twin town choir from Clermont in France, featuring traditional French and British songs. Previous years’ themes have included ‘Music from the Forties’, featuring well-known standards like ‘As Time goes By’, and ‘A Foray into the Fifties’, featuring songs from West Side Story.

The Christmas Experience features popular Christmas music and some less well known pieces, along with readings, poetry and refreshments.

What about social activities?

We organise a social programme, including quiz nights and a summer barbecue. We are currently reviving the programme, so all suggestions are welcome.

Who will help me in my first few weeks if I join?

Each voice part has a nominated person to support new members and help them settle in.

Soprano:                        Barbara Copp

Alto:                              Julie Franklin/Jenny Mitchell

Tenor/Bass:                   John Hedge

Voice reps are also responsible for collecting in music scores after each performance.
